Hunter reached into the pocket of his jeans, his phone at his ear in a second. He was no doubt calling in the cavalry, which we’d need if we didn’t make it to the road in the next few seconds. There was a gas station with a motel across from it that looked like it belonged in a slasher film down the road. With potential witnesses a short distance away, they were unlikely to draw attention to themselves by continuing to fire.

We’d parked at the back of the motel, and it didn’t take long for me to hear the rumble of the bikes. From behind us there was shouting, but as predicted, no more gunfire followed us to the edge of the road. That didn’t mean that we were in the clear. Far from it. If they rode out after us, there was nothing but the occasional ranch for miles. We would be sitting ducks.
